About the ESSC

What is the English Social SolutionS Contest?

Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who come together to make positive, lasting change in communities at home and abroad.

The ESSC has its origins in the inter-collegiate English Speech Contest (ESC) that has been conducted by the Rotary Club of Taipei (RCT) for 69 years. The ESSC is aimed at challenging the youths of Taiwan to identify an actionable solution for a Social Problem.

Solving real problems takes real commitment and vision. For more than 110 years, Rotary members have used their passion, energy, and intelligence to take action on sustainable projects. From literacy and peace to water and health, we are always working to better our world, and bettering our communities.

This challenge aligns with the core of what Rotary stands for, service above self. Rotarians spend most of their time sourcing, planning and then executing various service projects for those in need. This challenge aims to extend Rotary values to all aspects of the communities. Students will have the opportunity to highlight a need in their local community. Once the need is identified then we encourage the student to think about a way to meet the need with a sustainable solution. This solution may be shaped into a social enterprise, a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project, an educational project, a local community service project, etc.

The objective of the English Social Solutions Contest is to:

  1. Raise awareness about social issues in Taiwan.

  2. Identify feasible and actionable solutions to help resolve social issues in Taiwan.

  3. Improve leadership, presentation, confidence and communications skills.

  4. Take actions related to Rotary and the local community.

Competition topic categories include:

  1. Health
  2. Education
  3. Economic Development
  4. Environment
  5. Aging population
  6. Others...
